Handbook
Who Can Receive Services from the Infant-Toddler Program?
Your child and family may receive services if:
- your child is younger than age 3, and
- one of the following three categories describes your child.
I. Developmental Delay
Children who have developmental delay show a delay
in one or more areas:
- thinking and learning skills (cognitive development)
- moving, seeing and hearing (physical development)
- understanding and using sounds, gestures, and words (communication
development)
- responding to and developing relationships with other people (social-emotional
development)
- taking care of one's self when doing things like feeding or dressing
(adaptive development)
II. Atypical Development
Children with atypical development may be developing
differently from other children their age. There may be concerns related
to the child's behavior such as hyperactivity, extreme fearfulness or
distress, or lack of interest in other children or adults.
III. High Risk
Children at high risk may not have a specific delay or disability, but
might be eligible if:
- there are at least three concerns with the child or family that could
result in a delay or disability at some time. Examples of such concerns
include premature birth, low birth weight, breathing problems at birth,
or a mother who is very young
or
- the child has a condition known to result in a delay or disability
as the child gets older. Examples include genetic disorders or vision
or hearing loss.
The above descriptions are summaries and not the complete definitions
of the eligibility categories. You can get more information
by asking your Child Service Coordinator.
